Role Summary:

The Director, Business Development is a pivotal role supporting the company’s business development activities. This individual will leverage their expertise to evaluate clinical-stage drugs, build Net Present Value (NPV) models, and drive strategic initiatives.

While prior knowledge of the specific therapeutic area is not required, the role demands a strong understanding of the business side of biotechnology and adaptability to learn market dynamics and competitive contexts. The Director will work closely and cross-functionally with teams in Finance, Clinical, and Commercial to develop and refine modeling assumptions and diligence processes.

This position is ideal for candidates with a background and strong interest in biotechnology, preferably in banking, sell-side equity research, investing, or pharma/biotech business development.

This role is based in Waltham, MA with the possibility of being a hybrid role..

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Build and manage a robust pipeline of deal opportunities aligned with the company’s strategic objectives, while leading end-to-end deal processes, including sourcing, cross-functional diligence, structuring terms, and driving negotiations
  • Develop Net Present Value (NPV) models for ‘Own vs Partner’ scenarios, collaborating with cross-functional teams in Finance, Clinical, and Commercial to refine assumptions and assess the feasibility and strategic fit of potential opportunities
  • Drive diligence processes by coordinating cross-functional Q&A, managing data rooms, ensuring accurate document uploads, and overseeing permissions
  • Act as a core member of the Deal Team, supporting future negotiations and contributing to the broader business development strategy, extending beyond owned therapeutic areas
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, fostering alignment with company objectives and identifying creative opportunities to expand the company’s partnering presence
  • Understand the competitive landscape, leveraging insights from commercial teams to assess market dynamics, industry trends, clinical news, and deal activity within owned therapeutic areas
  • Represent the company at conferences, meetings, and industry events to strengthen the company’s network and enhance its presence in the industry
  • Develop a deep understanding of the science underlying the company’s mechanisms of action in owned therapeutic areas, synthesizing findings and providing actionable implications for internal stakeholders, including senior executives

 

Education and Skills Requirements:

  • MD, PhD, or MBA plus 8 years as banker/investor preferred
  • Or undergraduate degree plus 10 years of experience in the biotech/pharma industry as an investor/banker in a business development capacity
  • Experience building NPV models for clinical stage drugs
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to learn about the Therapeutic Area in depth
  • Passion for the biotechnology sector
